5 things you can do today to start getting recommended by AI

No tech skills. No developer needed. Under an hour of work. These are the exact fixes that make AI engines like ChatGPT start recommending your business instead of your competitors'.

When someone asks ChatGPT "who's the best [your type of business] near me?" — AI picks who to recommend based on specific signals on your website and across the internet.

Most small business owners haven't set up any of those signals. That's why you're invisible. The good news: the fixes below are all free, all easy, and all work in under an hour combined.

Step 1

Fix the very top of your website

Takes about 2 minutes

Right now the top of your website probably says something like "Welcome" or "Home" or your business name in big letters. AI reads that and has no idea what you do.

Change it to a sentence that says three things: what you do, who you do it for, and where you are.

Examples
Welcome to Bella's
→ Italian family restaurant in Newport, Oregon, serving fresh pasta since 1998
Dr. Smith Chiropractic
→ Chiropractor in Austin, TX helping runners and athletes recover from pain
Bright Ideas Consulting
→ Marketing consultant helping small e-commerce brands grow on Instagram

That's it. AI now knows exactly who you are.

Step 2

Answer 5 questions your customers actually ask

Takes about 20 minutes

When someone asks AI "which [your type of business] should I pick?" AI looks for pages that answer real questions. So give it a list.

Write out the 5 questions you hear most from customers before they buy. Then write a 2-3 sentence answer for each. Add them to your homepage or a new page called "Common Questions."

Use these starter questions and change them to fit your business:

  1. How much does [your service] cost?
  2. How long does [your service] take?
  3. Do I need to do anything before our first meeting?
  4. What makes you different from other [your type of business]?
  5. How do I get started?

Don't overthink it. Write the way you'd talk to a new customer.

Step 3

Fully fill out your Google profile

Takes about 15 minutes — do it from your phone

When someone asks ChatGPT about a local business, ChatGPT often looks at Google first. If your Google profile is empty, you're invisible.

Open the Google Maps app on your phone, find your business, tap "Edit profile," and fix these four things:

  1. Add at least 10 photos. Outside of your business, inside, your team, your work, your food, your products. No stock photos — real ones from your phone.
  2. Pick the most specific category. Not just "Restaurant" but "Italian Restaurant." Not just "Contractor" but "Kitchen Remodeling Contractor."
  3. Write a real description. 2-3 sentences in your own words about what you do and who you help.
  4. Add your own questions and answers. Yes, you can! Type a common customer question, then answer it yourself. Do 3-5.

Don't have a Google profile yet? Search "Google Business Profile" in your browser and set one up first. It's free.

Step 4

Get listed on 2-3 places that fit you

Takes about 30 minutes per listing

AI cross-checks business listings across the web. The more places you appear, the more AI trusts you.

Find your business type below and go sign up for those 2-3 sites:

🍽️ Restaurant or café
Yelp · TripAdvisor · OpenTable
💇 Hair, nails, spa, wellness
Yelp · Vagaro · Booksy
🩺 Doctor, dentist, therapist, chiropractor
Healthgrades · Zocdoc · Yelp
🔧 Home services (plumber, cleaner, handyman)
Angi · Thumbtack · Yelp
💼 Coach, consultant, freelancer
LinkedIn (Company Page) · Clutch · your industry's main association directory
🛍️ Retail or online shop
Google Shopping · Yelp · your industry's main association directory
⚖️ Lawyer, accountant, financial advisor
Avvo (lawyers) · CPA directory (accountants) · LinkedIn

Just fill out each one completely. Don't skip fields. Same info every time.

Step 5

Put your business name and city in your page titles

Takes about 5 minutes

This is the last one and it's the easiest. When you save pages on your website, there's a little box called "title" or "page title" or "SEO title."

Change every page title to look like this:

[What the page is about] — [City, State] — [Your Business Name]

Examples:

That's the whole thing. AI reads titles first before it reads anything else on the page.
